Staff Spotlight: Kianna Martin – Indigenous Youth Outreach Worker, Indigenous Health and Wellness Program
When asked about creating programming for Indigenous Youth throughout Durham Region, Kianna Martin often finds herself saying:
“Children should be able to be children with access to a safe environment where they know they can be themselves.”
Kianna is at the heart of the Indigenous youth programming at DCHC. She is an inspiring leader, cultural advocate, and incredibly dedicated Indigenous Youth Outreach Worker who is a member of the Indigenous Health & Wellness Team at DCHC. Kianna has played a pivotal role in designing and delivering engaging, culturally-grounded programming that uplifts youth, fosters community connection, and celebrates Indigenous identity.
Through her leadership, Kianna has developed vibrant cultural programming that honours traditional drumming, singing, and dance. These sessions not only explore the deep cultural significance of these practices but also create meaningful, empowering experiences for youth. The impact for Indigenous Youth has been profound:
- A deeper understanding of the cultural role of drumming and singing in Indigenous traditions
- Increased confidence, teamwork, and leadership through collaborative music-making
- A stronger sense of identity and pride, reinforcing cultural connection and belonging
- Opportunities to perform and share cultural practices with the wider community
Beyond cultural initiatives, Kianna has expanded recreational opportunities through youth-led basketball, flag football, and other active programs. These safe, inclusive spaces help youth build friendships, develop physical and social skills, and grow as leaders.
Kianna’s work also extends to broader community collaboration. She has strengthened partnerships with organizations like Right to Play, and this summer, she will launch a one-week Indigenous Youth Camp Called “Paint Turtle”—an exciting initiative that blends culture, wellness, and recreation.
In addition, Kianna is working with the support of the Region of Durham Community Safety & Well-Being team to deliver “Healing in Our Truth: Youth Mental Health Experience,” a culturally safe, youth-driven mental health initiative that responds directly to the needs of Indigenous youth.
Her dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. One community partner recently shared:
“Kianna has been amazing to work with and went the extra mile to make the client’s journey seamless. Without all of the support, I’m not sure his new beginning would be happening right now!”
Kianna Martin’s work exemplifies compassion, leadership, and cultural integrity. We are proud to celebrate her unwavering commitment to Indigenous youth and the powerful role she plays in building stronger, more connected communities.
