DCHC Movie Night Feature: Sugarcane

The Haudenosaunee Women’s Circle invites you to movie night: “Sugarcane”

This Secwepemc-led documentary uses multiple stories, to tell the history of the St. Joseph’s Mission, from painful truths about genocide to the love that persists within families.

Rooted at the Sugarcane Reserve near Williams Lake, Sugarcane focuses on the stories of people affected by the notorious residential ‘school’ that operated from 1891-1981.

The film explores the First Nations ongoing investigation into the school, which has heard accounts of disappearances, murder, systemic torture, rape and starvation of children, and newborn babies fathered by priests tossed into the school’s incinerator.
