We are excited to announce an incredible new initiative for Durham Region!

The Ontario government has revealed plans for a new Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub in our community, with Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) selected as the lead agency. This innovative hub will provide life-changing services for individuals struggling with addiction and mental health challenges, helping them regain stability and rebuild their futures.

A Hub Tailored for Our Community

The HART Hub is part of a province-wide initiative to establish 27 hubs focused on addressing homelessness and addiction recovery. These hubs are designed to connect individuals with comprehensive care, including mental health and addiction services, primary care, supportive housing, and employment resources. For Durham Region, this means a transformative space where individuals can access the support they need to recover and thrive.

A Unique Expertise in Supporting the Unsheltered

“We are incredibly honoured that Durham Community Health Centre has been chosen as the lead agency, in partnership with the Regional Municipality of Durham, for the HART Hub in Durham Region,” said Francis Garwe, CEO of DCHC.

“At DCHC we have a deep commitment to the health and wellness of unsheltered individuals living throughout Durham Region and we are uniquely equipped to support those struggling with addiction and mental health issues. For years, the medical and outreach members of our Unsheltered Health & Wellness Team have worked closely together to improve the well-being and day-to-day situations of unsheltered individuals in our community. The HART Hub will be a wonderful way for us to expand our reach and have an even larger impact within the unsheltered community throughout Durham Region.”

A Future of Hope and Recovery

Once operational, the HART Hub will offer a range of vital services, including:

  • Primary care and health education
  • Mental health and addiction treatment
  • Supportive housing for mental health and addiction recovery
  • Employment and income support

This initiative aligns with the Ontario government’s “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care” and builds on the Roadmap to Wellness, ensuring that individuals in Durham Region can access integrated and compassionate care when and where they need it.

Moving Forward Together

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Ontario government, the Regional Municipality of Durham, and all our community partners for making this vision a reality. The HART Hub will not only provide critical support but will also be a beacon of hope and recovery for individuals and families across Durham Region. Together, we are creating a safer, healthier, and more inclusive community.

Stay tuned for updates as we work toward the opening of the HART Hub, and join us in supporting this transformative step for our community!
