We are thrilled to share some exciting news for the youth of Durham Region!

The Ontario government has announced the launch of a new Youth Wellness Hub in Ajax, with Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) proudly serving as the lead organization. This new initiative will provide essential services to youth aged 12 to 25, supporting their mental, physical, and social well-being in one convenient and welcoming location.

A Hub Designed for Our Community

The new Youth Wellness Hub is part of a province-wide network expansion, increasing the total number of hubs to 32. These hubs offer youth-friendly spaces where young people can access a wide range of services, including mental health and substance use support, primary care, social services, and employment assistance. For youth in Durham Region, this means a space closer to home where they can feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

A Commitment to Equity and Collaboration

At DCHC, we are deeply honoured to lead this initiative. The Youth Wellness Hub represents the culmination of over a decade of collaboration with our community partners and a steadfast commitment to equity. This hub will focus on serving equity-deserving youth, including those from Black, Indigenous, Newcomer, and 2SLGBTQI+ communities. By addressing the unique needs of these groups, we aim to foster an environment where every young person can access the care and support they deserve.

Francis Garwe, CEO of DCHC, shared the significance of this initiative:

“We are truly honoured that Durham Community Health Centre has been chosen as the lead organization for this deeply meaningful collective impact initiative. The Youth Wellness Hub in Durham Region is a testament to the power of Community Health, bringing together our valued partners to create a safe, supportive space where youth can thrive, both mentally and physically. This initiative is especially meaningful as it is designed to meet the needs of youth from diverse backgrounds. It has been a true labour of love, built on over a decade of dedication, collaboration, and unwavering commitment from our community partners. We are excited to see the lasting impact this will have on the lives of so many young people in our region.”

Building a Brighter Future

Once operational, the Youth Wellness Hub will ensure youth across Durham Region have seamless access to the care they need. This initiative aligns with the Ontario government’s “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care” strategy, which aims to enhance access to mental health, substance use, and other critical supports across the province.

Aleem Sufi, the Chair of the DCHC Board of Directors also highlighted the importance of this milestone:

“This announcement is a game-changer for youth in Durham Region. It reflects our collective commitment to improving health outcomes for young people by creating accessible, inclusive spaces where they can flourish. The Youth Wellness Hub is more than just a service; it is a symbol of hope and collaboration that will positively impact generations to come.”

Moving Forward Together

We at DCHC extend our deepest gratitude to the Ontario government, our community partners, and everyone involved in making this vision a reality. The Youth Wellness Hub will not only provide essential services but also inspire a sense of belonging and community for our youth.
